WIIS-West is a WIIS U.S. Chapter based in the San Bernardino and San Francisco Bay areas, but focuses on the area between southern California and Victoria, B.C. Canada. Within this region are many public, private, and academic organizations focused on both traditional and human security. WIIS WEST was established in 2005 by graduate students of the National Security Studies program at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB).
We define "security" broadly to encompass a range of issues from counter-terrorism, defense and arms control to conflict prevention, peacebuilding, human rights and environmental security. Our areas of focus change based upon the interests and concerns of our members. Presently, we are focused on:
From 1999 through 2003, while living in Israel/Palestine during the Second Intifada, Berkley pioneered a variety of peace-building education and training programs. As the Founding Director of "Joy of Life," she developed a groundbreaking series of original programs for the development of self-awareness and personal empowerment in the midst of conflict. This experience still informs her work today.
Ms. Berkley has more than 25 years of experience in Natural Healthcare and Education, Stress Management, and Interpersonal Conflict Resolution. Dedicated to furthering peace and security in the world, she integrates psychological understanding, emotional and spiritual intelligences, and cultural relevancy into the public, private and not-for-profit sectors of society. Her work has been written about in a number of Israel/Palestine, U.K. and U.S. publications with worldwide distribution.
