WIIS WEST was established in 2005 by graduate students of the National Security Studies program at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB).

Our chapter covers the area between southern California and Victoria, B.C. Canada. Within this region are many public, private, and academic organizations focused on both traditional and human security.

We define "security" broadly to encompass a range of issues from counter-terrorism, defense and arms control to conflict prevention, peace-building, human rights and environmental security. Our areas of focus change based upon the interests and concerns of our members. Presently, we are focused on:

  • Cyber Security

  • Environmental Security (Includes, but not limited to: Alternative Energy, Water Security, Climate Change, Natural Disasters, and Natural Habitat Preservation)

  • Human Trafficking

  • U.N. Resolution 1325

  • Peace Leadership and Education

  • Bridging innovation, creativity, and traditional approaches to create a new era of Women, Peace, and Security

Within the peace and security field, we serve members of the public, private, and academic sectors who are based in the western provinces or states of Canada and the United States. We presently have two primary tracks of focus, one for students and entry-level members, the other for mid-upper level leaders.

  • sponsors networking mixers, speaking engagements, conference attendance, and research presentations

  • offers trainings, workshops, and educational opportunities

  • provides opportunities for networking, collaboration and mentoring, and

  • promotes the study and awareness of peace and security issues, building a network of partnerships among universities and professional organizations, public and private.

Lila Green, President

Lila Green is both new and not new to the world of international security.

She was the former president of WIIS @ MIIS (Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey), the same school from where she earned her Master's degree in Non- Proliferation and Terrorism Studies with a specialization in Financial Crimes Management; prior to this Lila spent over 13 years in the world of professional theatre and film, working primarily as an actor but also as a publicist and producer.  A BFA graduate of the prestigious Theatre School at DePaul University, Lila worked in Chicago, New York, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and points between throughout her career.  Both of her parents worked for the US Department of State in Foreign Service, which is where the seed was planted that resulted in her current "second-life.”  During her studies at MIIS, Lila also worked as a contract Research Analyst with a company that handled FCPA compliance investigations. She was the President of WIIS @ MIIS, and is a mom to a 5-year-old son.

Lila believes that her background as a performance artist feeds into her new career perfectly: storytelling is a very human need, both to do and to witness.  She is excited that she is able to share another aspect of this art through WIIS West Reflections and hopes you enjoy it too
