WIIS Italy President
Irene Fellin is an independent Gender and Security expert who has worked on gender issues and women’s rights for different international organizations. She served as Advisor to NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security from 2013 to 2014. She was in charge of providing advice to NATO staff on WPS related issues, of giving training to international officials, and of assisting the Alliance in the implementation of the Policy and the Action Plan for UNSCR 1325 and related Resolutions. Prior to joining NATO, Ms. Fellin lived in Ankara, Turkey for 4 and half years, where she worked at the local offices of UNICEF and UNDP. Her work there was focused on such issues as honour killing, early marriage and domestic violence. Training local staff on gender-related issues was also part of her activity. In Rome, where she is presently based, she is a member of local civil society engaged on promoting the role of women in politics, defense and security issues and on raising awareness on the important role that Italian women can play in international security. She works as a Gender research consultant at IAI – Istituto Affari Internazionali and as trainer on Gender, Peace and Security issues at CoESPU – Centre of Excellence for Police Stability.

Lia Quartapelle is an Italian MP of the Democratic Party (PD) and a member of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee. Her political commitment was born with the foundation of the Democratic Party in 2007 when she set up a PD club in Milan. She was elected Secretary and worked actively leading the club to be one of the largest of Milan. She won the PD primary elections and in 2013 was elected in the Lombardia 1 constituency in the Chamber of Deputies. After a earning a masters degree from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, and completing her PhD in Economics, Lia Quartapelle become a research fellow at ISPI Institute. She is primarily concerned with economic issues relating to Africa, where she worked as Budget Support Italian Cooperation for the Government of Mozambique.
WIIS Italy Vice President
Nicoletta Pirozzi is Senior Fellow in the European Affairs area of the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and Adjunct Professor at "Roma Tre" University. She works mainly on European Union's foreign, security and defence policy, civilian crisis management, European Union's relations with the United Nations and African Union. In 2012, she has served as Seconded National Expert at the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels. Previously, she has been research fellow in the European Foreign and Security Policy Studies Programme and visiting fellow at the EU Institute for Security Studies in Paris. In 2005-2006, she was Project Officer responsible for the Responding to Conflict programme area at the International Security Information Service (ISIS) Europe in Brussels. She also collaborated with the Italian Permanent Representation to the EU and the European Parliament in Brussels. She graduated in Political Science at the University of Pisa and at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa. She also obtained a MSc Degree in European Political and Administrative Studies from the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium) and a Ph.D. in Institutions and Politics from the Catholic University in Milan.
